Many of you are undoubtedly avoiding all mirrors in the house and waking up in despair at your hair! You are not alone and in these unprecedented times rest assured there are many more imperative things such as health, family and happiness to worry about. That being said it has a major impact on our mental health if we feel a mess. There are some things we can do to ease the pain.

Firstly, you can treat you hair to time, care and attention you would ordinarily not be able to give. So try leaving your conditioner on a little longer to allow it to really soak through the cuticles of the hair shaft and penetrate properly to help repair damage. Maybe even using that deep conditioner/treatment that you have at the back of the shelf that you were given last xmas (or was it xmas before!)

Maybe even using that deep conditioner/treatment that you have at the back of the shelf that you were given last xmas (or was it xmas before!)

Spend more time on a head massage when applying conditioner. Hairs food and nourishment is the blood supply, therefore massage draws blood to the surface and feeds the hair follicle. This means regular head massage can promote hair growth at a time where some may have issues due to the stress of our current situation. It ultimately is also relaxing and if you can persuade someone else to massage your scalp even better!!

Some people struggle with fragile and brittle areas of hair, particularly around the hairline. Often this is due to excessive styling of these areas and sometimes due to tying hair back into ponytails and such like. Being at home may mean that you can use hot hair tools less frequently and leave your hair down, both of which will help improve brittle areas.

Now covering those tell tale roots can be more challenging from home and unfortunately many of my clients are already in touch with news of their “home hair accidents”. If you feel up to trying to use styles that obscure your parting, this is the way to go. Using a zig zag parting can work well. To do this you use a pintail comb (or skewer?) start at the front of your hair on the parting line. Zig zag along the parting towards the crown then pull the comb up and divide the hair. This will give a little body across the parting and hide the root area. You could also try backcombing a little at the roots to help hide an obvious root.

Now if you absolutely can’t stand the line and feel desperate enough to reach for the box dye, (for me should be a last resort!) then hopefully you are aware of the depth of colour your stylist uses. The encouraging news is that the colour numbering system is universal for professional and non professional colours and whilst you may struggle to obtain the correct tone you can get fairly good match of depth. So the first number is the depth and lets you know how light or dark you are. I would advise you get someone to carefully apply to your root area only with a basting brush to avoid sticking it all over your hair.

Hopefully that’s of help. Next time I may be forced to explain the safest way to let your husband/son/daughter cut your fringe. Here’s hoping we will all be back under the care of professionals before that is necessary!

Stay Safe and embrace the roots, I am certain that these lockdowns will inspire a future hair fashion!!!
